Topic: Cal not sure what role Mulder and others will play

Junior college transfer Mychal Mulder was recruited because of his 3-point shooting ability but also impressed many with his athleticism during summer play.
However, in Friday's win over Kentucky State, Mulder played sparingly and did not enter the game until late in the first half.
"These guys – they’re all fighting for time. Charles (Matthews) and Derek (Willis) and then Dominique (Hawkins) is coming back. So all of the sudden, OK, do three of them deserve to take Tyler's minutes, of Jamal's minutes, of Isaiah's minutes," Kentucky coach John Calipari said.
"If they don't, you're only spelling them. If you deserve some of those minutes, that's fine. We have got to work that out. And some of it is being worked out in practice. Some of it is being worked out in games. Some of it will be worked out as we go.
"I'll be honest with you, some of it will be game to game. Some games it may be Charles, some games it may be Derek. Just game to game."

He appears to be in the odd man out category. He may get some playing time against zone defenses if he can get his three point shot to falling but if not, he will see very little playing time on this team. He got very limited minutes in the two exhibition games which is usually an indication of regular season playing time.

As I said earlier we have a 2 platoon type group of players. Just like last year we have accumulated too much talent again. I don't know how I could say that. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) But if all of these guys start contributing as they get a chance to play, Cal will have to find a way for all of them to get some time or it could eat at the unity of the team. We started out slow with trouble getting good players to commit to the this team but now we have plenty of guys, especially those that can play guard. I wouldn't want to see any of them transfer but a guy like Mulder who is a Junior could become disenchanted after being a star last year.

Mulder is a junior and it would really be hard for him to transfer. His 3 point shooting is why he is a Cat and he probably understands that. Hopefully he will become a big part of this team by filling his role as a shooter.

With Mulders 3 point shooting ability he has to get minutes. Three point shooting is a heck a asset and Cal will take advantage of it.

Cal is a man of his word and all goes the way it looks Mulder will get minutes. His outside shooting if as good as advertised will get him those minutes.

I'd say Mulder is just having to make the adjustment from JC ball to HIGH DIV I ball!

Mulder will learn a lot in practice and by SEC time will be ready for a solid season.

Cal always finds away to get the best players on the floor. We are lucky to have him as our coach.
