A return for Keion Brooks Jr. may not be imminent, but it is on the horizon.
Sitting out since early October with a calf injury, UK head coach John Calipari says he feels “good” the sophomore will be back by the time conference play begins in two weeks when the Wildcats take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at home on Dec. 29.
“You know, I feel good about it,” Calipari said during his weekly call-in show Monday evening. “He’s not in contact stuff right now. We’ve got to do what the doctors are saying. They’re saying they want to be slow with it, and I’m fine (with that).”
When discussing Brooks’ situation, Calipari also addressed the devastating news of Florida star forward Keyontae Johnson being placed in a medically induced coma after collapsing to the floor during the team’s game against Florida State on Saturday.
While the situations are obviously miles apart and comparing the two would be ludicrous, Calipari stressed that it’s yet another example of just how important it is to trust medical professionals when it comes to health matters and injuries.
“I was sick in practice (Monday) at the end,” Calipari said. “Coach Barbee came up to me and said Keyontae Johnson from Florida, who fell out on the floor (on Saturday against Florida State), he’s in a coma. He’s in a coma. I told the team, “We all need to be praying for him.” It’s incredible. With any injury, you’ve just got to count on the doctors.
“They just want to do what’s right for the kid’s health, I’m not going to fight it. I believe (Brooks will) be fine and hopefully sooner than later.”

You'd think 2 more weeks and he would be playing. If not, I'm not counting on him at ball. I didn't think he would be starting anyway with Jackson on the team.
