UK has six players that they can count on to make a positive impact in the game, this season. Six!
So what if UK has the best recruiter and one of the highest paid in the sport. The fact is that they are short handed. Knight and Liggins play 95% of the minutes, each game.
With the class that he has coming in, next year, he will have the best team in the land. But this season, this team will go as far as their luck hold out. [ 01-23-2011, 07:56 AM: Message edited by: boomdaddy ]

Plans never work out completely like you plan them. First Orton leaves. Then Dodson gets in trouble and leaves. Then Kantor gets disqualified. There is a full 13 man roster if we still had them. And there's no doubt all three could have provided us with a 9 man rotation.
Orton Kantor Jones Miller Knight Harrellson Liggins Dodson Lamb

So now we all know why we are where we are. It definitely wasn't planned that way. So what happens next year? We could be in trouble again if some of these guys decide they are good enough to play for pay. Looking back at Bledsoe and Orton you can't just say none of this years players will leave besides Harrellson. We all know what a little word in the ear of these kids will do for their confidence and they could be gone. Say all three freshmen were to leave, god forbid. Next year we would have the fabulous 4 coming in plus Liggins and Miller with experience. That gives us 6 good bodies again. Unless Hood, Vargas, Polson or Poole were to improve we would still be in the same spot with maybe a stronger starting 6. And the following year with the possibility of 4 more frosh departing with Liggins and Miller and Vargas that would leave Hood and Polson and ?. This could be a roller coaster that goes straight downhill if most of these guys think they are good enough to depart after 1 year. I doubt all of these leaving after one year but the possibility is there. There is a bad side to all this top recruiting classes every year.

I'm starting to believe now that you can't win a title with 90% freshmen. Not going to happen. We are going to deal with this for a long time. You need some junior and senior leadership to complement the young guys. I can see right now, knight will leave along with jones and heck if lamb peaks out by march, he could leave. Don't forget Harrellson gone. Bingo, new roster...same whole thing. Guys get use to this!

Not sure what Cals take on this will be. If these 3 think they can go after one year does he try to convince them to stay? Do any of them want to win a championship? Will they have the power to say no? I could envision a 96 team all over again next year but it will take some dedication to pull it off. We have the nucleus with 5 players from this year and add the 4 next year and we have a good solid 9 man rotation or 10 with Twany. But I have my doubts of ever seeing it. The one player that I thought wasn't ready was Orton. He got drafted in the last pick of the first round, which ended up being a smart move on his part. He had his knee cleaned up and will have a chance to make his mark, before his next contract, where the real money is made. Had he dropped to the second round, with no gauranteed money, it would have been a colossal mistake on his part.
I really don't mind that UK is waiting on a full roster. Maybe we, the fans, get greedy sometimes, expecting a championship team on the court, every season. Personally, I prefer to have a coach who brings in the best players and we fans have to fret about who is leaving early. I think that is a much better thing to worry about than fretting over why our favorite program is not even on the top five list of the big name recruits.

I think the sample size is too small to draw conclusion A: you can't win with a bunch of freshmen or conclusion B: the roster is going to be almost entirely freshmen every year.
First of all, with Enes Kanter on this team as originally planned, one could easily argue that this team would be the favorite to win a championship. I've seen the top teams (OSU, Kansas, Duke, Cuse and Pitt) play, and not only do they all seem as vulnerable as any of the top teams in recent memory, but none of them would match up favorably against a UK team that featured Kanter in the middle.
Secondly, the roster will have quite a bit of experience next year with Miller, Liggins, Hood, Poole, Vargas, Lamb and possibly Knight returning. In addition to that, you don't know what impact a lockout will have on players deciding whether or not to enter the draft, or what new rules a new labor agreement will bring. All of which can have an effect on available players and when/how a player can declare for the draft.
There are only two certainties. 1. UK is relevant again and 2. these guys are fun to watch.
