Box Score

Vandy deserved to win this game. Knox had 18 points but used 15 shots to get them. Only 7 assists tonight on 29 made baskets.

Knox did finish with 8 boards though, Although we got smashed on the glass in the second half!

Free throw shooting is the only reason I can find of why we won tonight's game

Another reason we won the game was by turning Vandy over 15 times to our 9.

We also had 6 steals to their 3 steals.

I agree with you, SCWC. I kept thinking after the game that Vandy deserved to win a little more than us. But I'll take the win, and what an exciting game it was. I like how Shai was clutch down the stretch.

Part of the reason for the lack of assists was that most of our offense was the ball screen for Shai to drive to the rim. Effective, but no assist.

That being said, it is surprising that Green played 31 minutes and had ZERO assists. I am sure that we had other offensive options besides the drive. I mean, Gabriel did not score. Diallo had one basket. Not only were they not scoring, they were not taking many shots. When Knox is taking 15 shots (and missing most of them, some of the badly), but Richards, Gabriel, and Diallo combine for 10 shots, something is wrong.

It is good that Shai took it upon himself to win this game. But it was not much of a team win.

ESPN take on our team:

quote:

Kentucky: That Kentucky team that traveled to Morgantown on Saturday and left with an 83-76 win over West Virginia in the Big 12/SEC Challenge looked like a squad that might make a run in March. The Wildcats grabbed 55 percent of their missed shots and overcame 16 turnovers to win in one of college basketball's most hostile venues. Facing an eight-win Vanderbilt team on Tuesday in Lexington, however, the Wildcats failed to seize control until Green recorded the game-winning bucket in overtime. But take another look at the shot before Green's game-winner. Vanderbilt's Clevon Brown scored on a putback off Saben Lee's missed 3-pointer to tie the game. The Wildcats didn't box out. They just stood there, baffled while Brown snatched the rock. That was an effort play. That wasn't coaching; wasn't personnel. They just didn't fight for a critical rebound, and the lazy display nearly sent the game to a second overtime. Kentucky has multiple five-star prospects. But its inconsistency is reminiscent of the 2013-14 squad that didn't find a rhythm in the NCAA tournament. Maybe the Wildcats will repeat that feat and do their best work in March. But this young squad is an evolving quagmire. You just wonder if they'll have enough time to find themselves before the postseason begins.
quote:

I know this team have many of us fans scratching our heads and wondering if and when they will really get it. This group have to be driving Cal nuts. All we can do is hope that they do all the things needed to become a consistent team before the tournament starts in March. We all hope their comparison to the 2014 team bears fruit and that this group end the season strong like that team did.

That ESPN guy couldn't have summed it up any better than that. I fully expected to see the 2nd half of the WVU Cats and not the first half of the WVU Cats in the Vandy game.

Defense and rebounding made me scratch my head. The whit guy for Vandy drove on us...LaChance...I believe,,,he also hit 3s....but choked at the end at the charity stripe...

They had a kid #1 on his jersey that killed us from 3 line and he missed at the end and it could have cost the game.

Kentucky boys made plays on the Vandy and Vandy mad plays on the Cats. Losing the shooters of Vandy (soft D) and not going after rebounds with maximum effort, caused the OT game and the Cats were lucky to prevail.

I expected a 15 point route and got to see a nail biter victory instead. I knew they would win in OT, but had serious doubts that they would could win, before the tie in regulation.

Vandy played very hard. Hats off to them.

Keep improving is all I have to say about those young Cats. I do think they had a let down, after the road victory.

I kept listening to the announcers talking about how we only had 1 assist way into the game like we are talking here. They weren't thinking with their heads for sure. How do you get assists? Someone has to make a shot when you give them the ball. Just look at our shooting %. If we had made more shots we would have gotten more assists. I know we had at least 7 or 8 open shots that would have had an assist with them if they had gone in. Duhhhhhhhhh!

Gabreil has gone ice cold from the 3 line. He has missed a ton of open shots.

I saw numerous players pass up open shots. I realize there are players that shouldn't shoot the 3 ball because they can't make, but when players pass up wide open shots, it puts pressure on other players to create when the shot clock is running down.

Diallo has made 3 point shots under pressure late in games. I think he doesn't look for his outside shot enough.

Green is hit an miss with his outside shot. His % has to be low. He made the layup at the end of the game, because there was not tall timber to stop him. He has a habit of driving into tall guys and making bad decisions

If they want to advance in the tourney, they need more than two guys who are not afraid to score. Right now it is Knox and Alexander. I think it has to be Hami to be that go to scorer.

There is a reason why some of our players are "wide open"! The opponent want them to shoot as chances are they will miss i.d. gabriel

Heck at the High School level we know who to guard and who not to guard - we want several players on our opponent team to shoot 3's and encourage them to do so!

I don't see Hami ever being a scorer. I cringe when he shoots the ball other than a dunk, and he is not a good finisher at the rim. Against WV, his shots went in, but they were acrobatic throw-ups that just happened to go in. Most of the time he misses those shots.
