Winning one game doesn’t qualify as a streak and the Kentucky basketball program is not in the business of “close calls” or moral victories. I am distinctly not here to say this team has turned a corner or that you should all of the sudden be clearing your March schedule. However, an opportunity to build some momentum does exist. Regardless of when this season comes to an end for the Wildcats it is important to finish the season on as positive of a note as possible.
Kentucky snapped a four game losing streak on Saturday with an 82-80 victory over the Auburn Tigers. Despite coming out on top this time, the game was more of the same that we have seen from the ‘Cats far too often this season.
The Wildcats began the second half by outscoring Auburn by 20 points to build a 63-49 advantage with 10:36 to play in the game. Auburn then proceeded to answer by coming all of the way back to tie the game with less than a minute left. It was another second half collapse by Kentucky. However, Davion Mintz nailed a 3-pointer with 32 seconds on the clock and UK was able to hold on for a victory.
Allowing yet another second half comeback was disappointing given how well Kentucky played to begin the half. However, as I always say, winning college basketball games is really hard and you should take every victory you can get. This team just needed to put one in the win column and they did that Saturday afternoon. That is progress.
