So, I've been thinking, (always dangerous), like everyone here I love UK basketball. I'm not sure how I feel about the future of UK basketball, or college basketball in general. The NIL era has really been off-putting for me. I haven't followed professional sports since a baseball strike decades ago. I just don't like the spoiled pampered athletes. (I know, they are all spoiled and pampered) At least with college sports, the enthusiasm of sports seemed to still live. I feel that is changing, and I'm not sure how I feel about it, or maybe more importantly, how to cope with it. Initially the transfer portal seemed to provide some bit of news in a generally quiet time of post-tournament life. However, currently I feel like its just an ebay auction, and seems to be stressing fans out thinking we should get this guy, avoid this guy, pay him now! Don't pay him!, etc... Perhaps I should just not follow from tourney end to midnight madness. Probably better for my sanity. Anyway those are my $.02. How you spending your pennies? Not on college athletics.
Like you, I am pausing and reconsidering. I really hate the way college sports works now. At least in the pros, you have multi-year contracts.
All that donor money that the NCAA was built to keep out is now flooding the campuses, unimpeded. UK may have great fans, but we are not a state known for millionaires and billionaires like others. IMO, Texas will dominate the SEC over the next decade, just because of NIL riches.
I am not even buying the "Kentucky Blue" bourbon to support the Cats. It just makes me feel... wrong.

It’s a great point you make about multi seasons for NBA contracts.
I may have to go watch grade school games to get amateur passion by players.
Incentive based NIL can’t work as it creates a ‘I gotta get mines’ mentally.
I just know I don’t like the current state. Maybe when the season starts I’ll have portal amnesia.

I went to several local high school games last year. I don’t believe I have been since my son played. I also was able to watch several games on utube.
I’ve also started watching the NBA. If you’re going to watch payed players, why not watch the best?

Yeah it has pretty much ruined it for me as well. I must have missed 12 or 13 UK games this year and fell asleep or just flat went to bad on another two or three games.
I tried to care, but it is just not there like it once was for me. I actually don’t even own a piece of UK clothing that fits at the moment except for one camo hat that fits I guess. That would have never been the case years ago and I generally wore UK gear every weekend.
Still glad Pope is the coach and still think he did a good job this year even though I don’t really care.
Honestly, this board and the people keep me more tied to UK sports than anything. If it ever goes away I can see myself not watching UK sports again.
-------------------- Wife's Mad. Told me we never talk anymore. And just last nite while watching super bowl told her 2 or 3 times to get me a coke and popcorn. Also told her not to forget to take out trash in the morning. Ain't that something. Also told me I was too indecisive. Can't figure out what to do about that. One nice thing I guess. She called me a pro crastinator. Don't know what a crastinator is but I guess I'm a good one for her to call me a pro. Gonna wait til tomorrow to look that up though. I love her but somrtimes can't help but thinking I should have told uncle Junior to keep his coon hound pup and stevens double barrel and also his youngest daughter.

Amen. I have been saying the same thing. It will be difficult for UK to continue to compete at a high level.
It really makes me mad when I hear Stoops asking the average fan to donate $10 dollars because we need it to compete.
I am like most of my family in Eastern Kentucky needs that $10 to put food on the table, but when they hear that they send the money to Lexington.
I was heartbroken a few months ago my 57 year old cousin, who has worked her whole life, had $3 in the bank. The place that she works missed their payroll deadline and she didn’t get her weekly check. Thank goodness for Venmo because I sent her some money to buy groceries and pay bills for the week.
That is why UK coaches asking the average joe for money makes me fume. [ 04-03-2025, 11:58 PM: Message edited by: Trey Ball ]

I'm with all of you. Paying student athletes is wrong IMO you may or may not agree with me. I've always loved college sports but this new nil era is turning me off from watching.
One would think that even though Kentucky is a predominantly poor state that with all the whiskey money and Horse owners would be enough to keep UK competitive.

I agree with you, rlt4uk. Basketball is technically an extra-curricular activity as far as I'm concerned. The money these kids were saving by having a full scholarship, as well as the life of a college basketball player, that's way more than any other students are getting. My niece is in her 30's and is still paying off student loans. I think the worse thing you can do for an 18-year old kid is give him/her a ton of money.

The only way that this can work out would be for the NCAA to incentivize the students to stay, instead of shopping around for a higher bidder every year. Here is my thought:
Set up a universal salary schedule: $100 for the first year, $200k for the second year $500k for the third year, $750k for the fourth year. If a student transfers, they reset to first year salary.
Any excess NIL proceeds beyond the salary payout will accumulate and be paid to students who play all four years as a bonus.

The incentive to stay idea would be great I think but the old hundred dollar handshake would just jump to the 100K handshake. That’s probably a low guess.
Honestly I’m glad others feel the same way I do about the current state of the game.
Just my $.02

I am all for the players getting paid if their name, image, likeness is generating revenue for the school or the sport. I do think they should profit, but it has gotten way out of hand.
It is now happening in high school as well where the kids are demanding money to attend a certain college.
I am sure before long it will be at the Elementary Level with a 5th grader trying to negotiate pay for what middle school he will attend. LOL.
