Score one for Penny Hardaway in the burgeoning basketball recruiting rivalry between Kentucky and Memphis.
Former UK commit D.J. Jeffries, the first player to decommit from Kentucky in the John Calipari era, announced Saturday he will play for Hardaway and Memphis next season.
When Jeffries, a four-star power forward, announced he had backed out of his UK commitment in July, speculation immediately pointed to Memphis as his future destination since he played for Hardaway's AAU team before the former Memphis and NBA star was hired to coach his alma mater.
Kentucky stopped recruiting Jeffries after the decommitment when his father blasted the staff as "unprofessional" in an interview with a Memphis radio station.
"They didn’t handle it the way I expected them to handle it, being professionals," Jeffries' father Corey told the Jason & John Show on 92.9 FM in Memphis. "I thought it would be handled better, but we’re not going to get into a mud-slinging contest with them. We’ll take the high road. That’s the way we were raised."
