A story about what Wesley Woodyard does off the field. He is a very special football player but even more special when is is off the field.

Woodyard, a senior linebacker, is a quarterfinalist for the Lott Trophy, named after former defensive back Ronnie Lott and given to the outstanding college defensive player of the year who makes the greatest impact off the field.

This past summer, the social work major spent seven weeks working at the Lexington Day Treatment Center, a community-based program for youths ages 12 to 18. The center offers education and counseling for boys and girls who have had trouble in their hometown school.

Clinical Services Director Lisa Berman said she's had a variety of athletes mentor at the center but that few have connected with the students the way Woodyard has.

"He just has a presence about himself," Berman said. "He seems very at ease around kids, no matter what their background. He knew that a lot of these kids had mental health issues and other things going on, yet he treated them all the same. He was really at ease with them."
