We have a very good chance to improve nest year with our 3 top juniors coming back..
University of Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks isn't one to look a gift horse -- or three gifted Wildcats -- in the mouth.
So although it's "a little surprising" that the three junior NFL prospects -- linebacker Micah Johnson, defensive end Jeremy Jarmon and cornerback Trevard Lindley -- are back for their senior seasons, Brooks isn't complaining.
"All of them expressed a desire to obviously get to another bowl (and) to climb the ladder in the SEC and try to get to be a major factor in the conference championship," Brooks said at a news conference yesterday. "Our chances are much better of doing that when you have three guys that, in various ways, have been named to the All-SEC defensive team."
Lindley was the last and most highly regarded of UK's top juniors to announce his return after submitting his name to the NFL for draft evaluation. His return clearly was the most surprising to Brooks, who said Lindley received a second-round evaluation from the NFL.
Brooks advised Lindley to look "very seriously" at the NFL but said the cornerback wanted to focus on enhancing his draft stock by getting bigger and stronger. He's also focused on finishing his degree and starting work on a second major or an advanced degree.
Lindley's decision to return, along with Johnson and Jarmon, gives UK three key defensive players who "will be among the best people at their position returning for the 2009 season," Brooks said.
