They are going after some good coachs and are spending big bucks in getting them.

Tennessee will pay more than $5.3 million to its football coaches in 2009, including $2 million for head coach Lane Kiffin and $1.2 million for defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. The previous staff under Phillip Fulmer was set to make a combined $4.7 million in 2009.

Recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Ed Orgeron has the next largest salary with $650,000 this season. Offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Chaney will make $380,000, and linebackers coach Lance Thompson will make $350,000. The total ranks Tennessee's football coaching salary pool fourth among the Southeastern Conference's football programs.

"While our coaches' salary model is unique, we feel it is a great model for Tennessee," Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton said in a statement. "Coach Kiffin understands the power of putting together a great team, and he used the budget we provided to assemble what many will consider to be the best staff in America."

I assume that Monte must be Lane's kin. Looks like he arranged a pretty sweet deal for him -- not too many coordinators make over a million per year.

Monte is Lane's father. Monte has coached for 26 years in the NFL and has been the Defensive Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Bucs for the last 12 years, 10 of which the D finished ranked in the top 10 in points allowed and yards allowed.

It is an unusual circumstance but Monte would be getting very nice money wherever he decided to coach this year.

NOTE:

In fact, this will be a pay cut for him to come coach with his son.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday reached agreement with legendary defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin on a multiyear contract extension, ESPN.com has learned.

The Bucs' defense has ranked among the league's top 10 statistically 10 times in Monte Kiffin's 12 seasons with the club.

Details of the contract were not immediately available, but it is believed the new deal will pay Kiffin in the area of $2 million per year. His previous contract, which had expired, paid $1.7 million annually.
