With Brooks career seemingly now in limbo, I believe naming Joker Phillips as the next head coach can have negative effects as well as positive. We have painted ourself into a future corner. Losing to South Carolina and Mississippi State in games we clearly should/could have won leaves one with a bitter taste. Most observers admit the program took a major step "back" Saturday night at home against MSU. Vanderbilt will lose at Florida, We will go to Nashville to play a 2-8 team on an eight game losing streak, with wins against Western Carolina and Rice. If at this point in the Brooks era we cannot muster enough strength to defeat Eastern and Vanderbilt, we will not deserve a fourth straight bowl bid. I told myself before the season that this team could not sustain many injuries to key players as our talent "depth" does not stack up to other SEC teams. Locke has been playing hurt, ditto for Micah Johnson, We have lost Lindley for a big stretch as well as Hartline, and lost Jeremy Jarmon for the entire season. All of that has played a negative effect on the program. Once again we have placed ourself into a position to try and come up with a win at Georgia. If we can win at Auburn there is hope at Georgia. A win over Tennessee would erase a ton of negative mistakes but Tennessee does not resemble the same team that played the first four games of the season. A win over the Vols to end an ugly streak once seemed possible now pales in consideration. We stand at 4-4, anything less then 6-6, would be a mega-disappointment, anything above 6-6, considering the losses to SC and MSU, would now appear to be improbable although not impossible. Brooks admitted after the MSU loss that the season we all hoped to have is no more. At this point winning out is the only option we have to salvage what could have otherwise been a great season by Kentucky standards. We need to put EKU away early and by a comfortable margin. Anything less will keep everyones mindset drenched in negativity. Not changing defensive strategy vs MSU was terrible and the offensive play calling was just as bad. It makes recruiting more difficult by allowing opponents to point to this when competing with us for potential signees. [ 11-02-2009, 03:34 AM: Message edited by: Bluecat ]
