Glad to see him back as we will need him down the stretch!

Quarterback Mike Hartline has returned to practice, Coach Rich Brooks reported Tuesday.

“Hartline did some good things, and then a couple of times looked like he had a little rust on him,” Brooks said. “Now, the question is how that knee will respond in the next 24 hours. We'll have to see how that goes. He moved around well and executed the whole offense.”

Hartline started the first five games of the season before sustaining a torn medical collateral knee ligament early in the third quarter at South Carolina. True freshman Morgan Newton has opened the last four games in Hartline's place.

A total of 15 starters and key reserves missed Sunday's practice because of injuries, but most of them returned to the practice field on Tuesday for limited or full participation, Brooks said. The exceptions were tight end Ross Bogue (strained knee) and wide receiver Gene McCaskill (turf toe), both of whom hope to return to practice before the end of the week. Tight end T.C. Drake (severe groin strain) already has been declared out for the Vanderbilt game.

True Hartline is back practicing but he is rusty and it may be hard to beat Vandy with a rusty quarterback.

On the football front, Rich Brooks said that Mike Hartline’s status is still uncertain for Saturday’s game. Hartline did practice Tuesday with a brace on his knee and looked “a little rusty” according to the coach. However, they plan to give him another go on Wednesday, depending on how his knee responds. With a winnable game against Vandy and two games where they’ll be underdogs left, you’d have to wonder what the value of playing Hartline is. Does a rusty Hartline give you a better chance to win against Vandy? I doubt it. It seems like the logical decision would be to let Morgan Newton take the lumps and have the opportunity to continue his growth.

You can get by being rusty vs LA Monroe or EKU, but its not very wise to throw him in against an SEc opponent on the road, even though Vanderbilt has now lost nine of their last ten games. A perfect scenario would be to start Morgan Newton at QB, hope to get ahead then slowly insert Hartline into the game as the situation permits,
score of the game being the all deciding factor.
