The University of Louisville has announced that the Personnel Committee of the U of L Athletic Association Board of Directors will meet to discuss personnel matters at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

The school is seeking a replacement for football Steve Kragthorpe. Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong is considered to be athletic director Tom Jurich’s top target.

I guess Strong is a good coach, but isn't he untested?

Has he ever been teh head coach of a football team? What's his record?

If UL is supposed to be this high and mighty BCS team then don't you think they'd be confident enough in themselves to go after a proven coach?

He may pan out, but it looks like a gamble to me.

No more of a gamble than the UK coach-in-waiting scenario. In fact considering the quality of UF's program relative to UK one could argue UL's decision is lesser risk.

I agree. he is much less of a gamble than Joker. Strong is one of the top defensive guys in college football. If he does welll, he will leave UL for a bigger job.

I agree with this part of your post, however, IMO, when you become a head coach at school which is seeking to head back to the top of the Big East Conference (or the SEC, Big 12, PAC 10, etc) you want a coach who has some head coaching experience at a lower level, if not at the same level. There is a great deal more to being a head coach than the Xs and Os and I'm not sure OJT at this level is the best way. But that's not my problem is it?

I keep hearing on Louisville radio how he will bring in the recruits like he gets in FLorida. But I beg to differ just a little. there's a world of difference between Gainesville FLorida and Louisville Kentucky!!

UofL fans have already gone over-board with their delusions. Some are claiming Florida's recent wins over UK as if UofL did them.

I was shocked to read in the newspaper this morning that Seth Hancock of Claiborne Farm fame apparently was the person instrumental in getting AD Jurich to seriously consider Coach Strong. Seth has been a long time supporter of UK athletics.

Seth and his family have been long time supporters of UK. I can't speak for him, but I have heard rumors that he wasn't happy with UK coaching choices for baskeball in the past and that his input was ignored. And, it has also been rumored that he had grown close to Donovan and the Florida program. I don't know how true that is. But, I don't see a problem with UL hiring Strong or Mr. Hancock helping bring him there.

If and when Brooks steps down, the onus is on UK. Is Joker the best choice? I like Joker. But, can he raise UK up to a higher level?

I used to play basketball with Seth at the Y in Paris many years ago and he was the BIGGEST UK suppporter there ever was. The UK players used to work on his (his dad's) farm during the summer.

Hard to believe that he would be a UL supporter now! I do believe, however that he and RP were close so maybe that has something to do with it.

Louisville is going to be sorely disappointed if they expect immediate turnarounds from Charlie Strong. He's a well versed coach when it comes to defense but I don't know about offense. Strong needs to hire one hell of a good OC to make him look good.

Louisville should expect the next few seasons to be something like UK had when Brooks was hired. Maybe Strong will surprise us but I don't really think so. But, then again, the Big Least isn't the SEC so maybe he will find success. Perhaps UL could go back to Conference USA for a few seasons? [Smile]
