UK just released an announcement welcoming former Cincinnati head coach Rick Minter as a co-defensive coordinator under Joker Phillips. The release says that Joker and Minter became friends while the current head UK head coach served on his new subordinate’s staff at UC, first as a wide receivers coach and then as a defensive backs coach. In a bit of “did you know” trivia that you can surely use to impress your friends, it says that Minter is one of “one of the most respected defensive minds in football” and had Rex Ryan, John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin and Jimbo Fisher on his staff at Cincinnati.

Here is what Joker said:

“Rick is a tough, hard-nosed defensive coordinator who has put together outstanding defenses at numerous schools,” Phillips said. “When I worked with him at Cincinnati, Rick had great knowledge of both sides of the ball. He does a great job of communicating with players and putting them in position to make plays.”

- The big news of the day to this point is obviously the hiring of Rick “Nuclear” Minter to play nice with Steve Brown as a co-defensive coordinator. His hire doesn’t have the sexiness of Randy Shannon, which I still believe was circulated only to appease the fan base that kind of rose of of nowhere in support of him, but he has a resume that is quite extensive and, to be honest, pretty impressive. Now, getting that to translate on the field and finding a way to do so while working with Brown (presuming he stays) is another story. But, it’s another clear sign that, if nothing else, Joker Phillips is surrounding himself with the people he trusts to help him fulfill his goal of a successful Operation: Win campaign.

- Lost in the shuffle a bit was the second half of the expected coaching news as former LaGrange (Ga.) coach Steve Pardue was also announced as the new running backs coach. Pardue is a native of Hopkinsville and has spent the last 25 years as a high school coach in Georgia (16 as the Grangers’ top guy). He’s most famously known for supplying the Cats with guys like Wesley Woodyard, Braxton Kelley, Randall Burden, Mychal Bailey and Qua Huzzie, but he also has built strong relationships throughout the state of Georgia during his time there. This move again reiterates Joker’s emphasis on recruiting out of his assistants. As a bit of a side note, I always find it fascinating to follow high school coaches who make the jump to college. It’s much more common than in basketball and there are success stories like Gus Malzahn or even Chuck Smith at UK and then oddball tales like Todd Dodge at North Texas. But, that’s just the sports nerd in me.

I feel like these are two good hires for Joker.And it's encourageing to see that he's trying to make us better,exspecailly with the minter hire.Coach brooks should have made A defensive change years ago.I think joker should completely let Steve Brown go because he'll just hold us back as a defence.

I guess I don't understand why, with Minter's long resume, that he was most recently at Indiana State as linebackers coach. Not the most glamorous of jobs.

Think his son played (or plays) there and he went there to coach him. Not sure but heard that someplace

From what I have read, it was a matter of circumstance, being on staffs that were in flux and departing. He has a strong background. I think it is a step up.

I live here in Terre Haute, home of ISU. A couple of points:

Rick Minter had retired, but his son was on the coaching staff here at ISU, and talked Rick into what is essentially a volunteer position. He is basically doing it to kill some time, and as a favor to his son...

The ISU football team is so bad that a two-win season is considered outstanding. This year, they had a major turnaround -- in part because of the presence and mentoring of Minter, and in part because they 'stole' the head coach from my college to be their offensive coordinator. ISU is having a spectacular year...

I really think that the Minter hire might be the equivalent of Rich Brooks. A solid, if underapprciated coach that still has some good years of football in him...
