We need quality players and till we get the players Kentucky football will be the same as these past 50 years.
Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes is on UK’s list. I’m convinced UK has at least reached out to his agent and has the feeling Dykes, who is 9-2 this year going into Saturday’s game with San Jose State, would have interest in the job if offered. While the Cats may also have interest in Cincinnati coach Butch Jones, who turned down $2.5 million per year from Illinois last year, it seems UK would have a more realistic chance to land Dykes if it moves now.
Here’s why Dykes could be a nice fit at Kentucky — and remember it doesn’t always take a big-name coach to succeed as James Franklin is proving at Vanderbilt.
— He knows Kentucky football. He was a graduate assistant at UK under Hal Mumme in 1997 when the Cats beat Alabama and came back in 1999 to coach receivers and special teams. The Cats beat No. 20 Arkansas and went to the Music City Bowl. He coached James Whalen, Quentin McCord, Derek Smith and Brad Pyatt, all future NFL signees.
— He has recruiting ties to Texas. He grew up in Texas and his father, Spike Dykes, was the head coach at Texas Tech. In 2000, Dykes joined from UK assistant coach Mike Leach’s staff at Texas Tech. He coached wide receivers for five years and then was promoted to offensive coordinator. In Dykes’ second season as co-offensive coordinator, Texas Tech ranked third in passing with 370 passing yards per game and sixth in total offense averaging nearly 450 total yards per game. That season Dykes directed an offense that scored 32 points per game, and two receivers ranked top three in the nation in receptions per game and a third receiver ranked in the top 20.
— He’s relatively young at age 43. He can relate to players and that also means he has a burning desire to win and continue to see his coaching career escalate. Every move he’s made — he went from Texas Tech to Arizona as offensive coordinator and then to Louisiana Tech as head coach in 2010 — has been an upward move and he’s continued to have more success at each stop.
— He does value defense. This year his defense is not that good, but it has been decimated by injuries to players he expected to have starting. Last year his team led the conference in defense. And his father valued defense at Texas Tech. Dykes loves a productive, entertaining offense, but he wants a defense that can get off the field, too.
“He has an ego, but what good coach doesn’t,” said one college coach who knows Dykes. “He trusts his coaches, though, and knows how to let coaches coach. He also genuinely cares about people in the program from the assistant coaches’ wives to the janitor. You can’t fake that. Sonny won’t cheat, either. What he will do is flat-out coach. At Kentucky, you better be able to coach. That’s what James Franklin has done at Vanderbilt. He has a plan, everybody is on board, he hired good assistant coaches and they outcoach some people with better talent.”
Those close to Dykes insist money — for him — will not be a main point in negotiations with one of several jobs he could be offered in the next few weeks. Instead, he’ll be more concerned with salaries for his staff and the overall commitment to football.

he sure does have a good resume, I belieive he would fit in nicely at uk. I like the air raid offense. If he can win at La tech he can win at UK.

I wouldn't want to put much money on it.

Norm is right, just ask Bradshaw, Ray, Curci, Clayborne, Curry, Mumme, Morris, Brooks and now Joker who all had losing tenures at UK.

Not only do some fans want a coach that is a winner, they also want him to be a saint? I am not a religious scholar, but to my knowledge, none of the characters in the bible were winning fooball coaches.
I don't know the answer. I do feel that the right coach can win anywhere. Notre Dame has had a bunch of misses and finally seems to have a winner.
UT has had more misses than Kentucky, recently.
If UT can't make a solid hire, how do we expect Kentucky to make one? Maybe we, as fans, are expecting too much. We should all accept the fact that the next coach will be signed at a bargain rate and he will more than likely get fired after three years.
I think Kentucky football fans, myself included, should quit dreaming and accept reality. There is no sense in getting excited or having anxiety over the length of the coaching search time frame. Mr. Mediocre will be announced to the fans, soon enough.

Sonny Dykes isn't coming here, some fans really want Petrino, some want Smart, and some other candiates. Mitch and Company are really most interested in Butch Jones but I know he isn't the right fit and talked to a good friend of mine about this hire. Now some rumors came out recently about Petrino has been hired as coach. I can't confirm it or deny it but there is alot of smoke. I do know Smart said he was not interested right now but I understand this response with a chance of another Championship. Many say expect Dec 1 we will find out anything about the coach search or the coach himself.

I think Butch would be a good fit at UK. He followed Brian Kelly at CMU and UC. My personal choice would be Coach Lembo, but my guess is UK will not even give him a look.

Trey, who is coach Lembo? I've never heard of that name. Where does he coach now?

There has to be some rumors out there. I say Hire Peterino, give him a room in Wildcat Lodge, ,,Problem solved, He gets what he needs and the Cats get 6-7 wins a year.. I yi yi.. Go CATS

He is the Head Coach at Ball State. After Brady Hoke left for SDSU, Ball State made the mistake and handed the program over to Stan Parrish for two years and the program struggled. This is Lembo's second year and BSU just finished the season at 9-3 and we will be going to a Bowl game.
He is a very innovative offensive coach in my opinion.

More smoke coming that UK has in fact hired Bobby Petrino, Mitch did not want to hire him but BOT and Boosters put too much pressure on him. Sunday or Monday may come out to being official.

If that happens than I can no longer support UK football. I have always thought Petrino was a dirtbag going back to his days at UL and he proved me correct leaving the Falcons during the season and then again with his lies and deceit at Arkansas.

Ditto.
People talking about having a coach that just wins are the same puddknockers that see teaching 3rd grade girls how to not get caught fouling when there is only one referee.
Sports without integrity on and off the field/court are not worth watching.

Louisville gave petino another chance and it's worked out good for them. Why shouldn't we give petrino another chance if he's repented who are we to judge. And before you question me no I don't know that he's repented but do you know that he hadn't? maybe we need to get the log out of our eyes before we worry about the speck in someone elses eye. I beleive he is the only coach availaible who could win on a consisent basis at UK.

FSU got blown out buy Florida. Kentucky can do that easily without hiring FSU's DC. I sure don't see that as a good choice.

Niether should losing be accepted, because the HC is wrongly percieved as a high character individual.

Boomdaddy, you do know he has the number 1 defense in the nation, candiate for the top dc in the nation, brother of bob stoops, he is a hell of a recruiter, he as good if not better as kirby smart. He would fix our issues on defense and offense. FSU offense put the defense is bad situations with turnovers.

Really? Wasn't FSU leading that game in the 4th quarter? Yes, FSU collapsed in the 4th for some reason, but they did not get blown out.

fsu had the #1 defence in the nation, look who they had to stop the Acc what A joke of a conference. This would be a terrible hire, name one team in the acc who could compete for the east or the west division in the SEC hmm I can't think of one either no big deal to rank high when you play the competion they've played.

Same was true of Petrino before he came to the SEC. His only success was in the Big East.
By this logic, the only coaches that should be considered are those that have had success against SEC caliber competition, and since the SEC is the best conference in the country, then noone except former SEC coaches can be considered. This pretty much limits us to Petrino.
I am with Trey. I will root for our boys, but it will take a long time to support Petrino. If his problems were one or two time occurrence, I might be willing to instantly forgive and move forward. However, his problems have been long standing and seem to have been everywhere he has been. There is a pattern of behavior that makes me worry. It is like a Morningstar report for a mutual fund...."Past performance is not indicative of future results", however we all know it is the best indicator that we have. I really do not want Petrino at Kentucky. Go find an innovative coach with a balanced, but up-tempo offensive approach that has a track record of having solid defenses. Create an excitement that makes it easier to recruit. Become the "east of the Mississippi" version of Oregon.

I guess what I am saying is, if we are going to take a chance, lets risk failing on the field rather than taking the risk that we fail off the field.

FSU lost the game because of 5 turnovers which several were short yardages for florida to score on. This guy recruits the talent to FSU he has major coaching connections all over the country, he did work with sonny dykes, his own brother bob stoops could also join him. If UK hires Stoops you better believe UK be competing and winning in the SEC. There won't be no 40-0 to Vandy, or getting man handled by WKU. That will end day one when Stoops and CO.gets on Campus. This would be a hell of a hire and he would beat a Bobby Petrino coach team.
