It might be better for Towles to red shirt rather than sitting on the bench all season.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops officially ended the speculation about UK’s top two quarterbacks going into the season by admitting after Tuesday’s scrimmage that either Jalen Whitlow or Maxwell Smith would start Aug. 31 when the Wildcats open the season in Nashville against Western Kentucky.

“No, we haven’t made a decision on the starter yet. We have narrowed it to two and I think both of those guys will play in the first game. I know both of those guys will play in the first game. I don’t know who’s going to start,” said Stoops. “They had some ups and downs (in the scrimmage). It wasn’t just a sieve like it was last spring at times. They had some good drives and some bad drives.”

Stoops said the third sophomore quarterback, Patrick Towles, had been “absolutely fantastic during the process” to determine a No. 1 quarterback.

“He fought. He wanted to win the starting job, but he’s had a great attitude, and that’s what I told him. Patrick has been very good, has continued to work extremely hard. He’s got as much talent as any quarterback we have on campus, but it’s just a matter of letting him grow into the situation a little bit,” Stoops said. “And he’s open to the idea, if the opportunity presents itself, to redshirt.

Do any of you football diehards know how good Whitlow or Smith can be this year? Do they have what it takes to at least make us a competetive team?

Paul, I don't think even the coachs know for sure how Smith and Whitlow are going to perform in the SEC. If the Cats can win 3-4 games in the SEC it would be a great season. We are just going to have to wait and see what happens.

I think Whitlow starts and will start every game, unless he gets dinged up during the season.

Towles may or may not redshirt, depending on the health of the other QBs. If either of the other two get hurt, I would think that Towles would play.

I think if the Cats win 3 to 4 games period it would be a great season. I'm not sure that they can win more than 2.

Trey, my heart says 2-4 SEC wins would be great. If I had to bet and money was on the line i'd say the Cats win 1 SEC game.

I don't see why they can't win 5 games. At least they will be putting points on the board.

I am hoping that Whitlow stays injury free. Am interested to see who will be the big play makers this season. We are going to see an up tmepo offense. The offense that the OC had last year was first in number of plays per game, which meant that they were not only successful, but got to the line of scrimmage quicker than anyone else. This limits the substitutions that the D can implement.

Stoops is a defensive coach. Read about how last years D hesitated at beginning of plays, because it was too complicated. Stoops has a record of improving his teams dramatically each season. Hope to see improvement in the D this year.

It takes several years to really reap the rewards of improved recruiting. But, in the mean time, UK will be fun to watch. Shouldn't be anymore confusion when they get to the red zone or punting 8 times a game.
