It's only going to get bigger now that Stoops is at Kentucky.

As the Louisville Cardinals begin their final season before heading off to the ACC, the rivalry in all sports between these two powerhouse Kentucky schools will definitely change a bit. It might not be considered a fantasy football matchup like it is in basketball, but some recent changes might end up taking it to new levels going forward.

In 2013, the Louisville will come to Lexington as huge favorites. They are a preseason top 10 team with a Heisman Trophy candidate in Teddy Bridgewater. They also have the perfect storm for a perfect regular season, as they are playing their final season in a weak American Athletic Conference.

Due to some scheduling logistics, and the fact that this year’s game (at least on paper) seems to be one-sided, the new era of the rivalry will begin in 2014. Louisville will officially be in the ACC, Kentucky will be improved with the recruiting class they are bringing in to make the game more competitive and it will move from a Week 3 matchup to a final week matchup.

Much like the annual Florida-Florida State game to conclude the regular season, the Louisville-Kentucky football game hopes to really build up a huge intrastate rivalry. For a rivalry that has revolved around basketball for so long, the matchup will now be close to that annual meeting as well. Thanks to Mark Stoops’ dedication to turning Kentucky into a major player on the recruiting trail, this game could be one to watch in the future. It will always be a big matchup in The Commonwealth, but fans around the country will certainly be tuning in if both teams are top 25 programs playing in the final regular season game of the year.

Maybe Louisville would rather just forget this years game? Maybe next year. [Frown]
