Stoops was asked this week if Max was the starter and he gave one simple answer “Yes”. Stoops also said Whitlow deserves to play, but if Max is hot they will stick with him.

I think Smith is better than Whitlow, but I really don't understand why Towles isn't the starter. I know that he may be behind both of those guys, but not far and Towles is the only one of that group that is an SEC caliber QB that you could build upon for the next few years. JMO.

Wife's Mad. Told me we never talk anymore. And just last nite while watching super bowl told her 2 or 3 times to get me a coke and popcorn. Also told her not to forget to take out trash in the morning. Ain't that something. Also told me I was too indecisive. Can't figure out what to do about that. One nice thing I guess. She called me a pro crastinator. Don't know what a crastinator is but I guess I'm a good one for her to call me a pro. Gonna wait til tomorrow to look that up though. I love her but somrtimes can't help but thinking I should have told uncle Junior to keep his coon hound pup and stevens double barrel and also his youngest daughter.

There is no Logic for what has transpired with the Q/backs.... I hope there is a strategy, Maybe its in what Trey Ball alluded to

Personally I doubt if any of the 3 QB options have the ability to be a good starting quarterback in the SEC game in and game out. They all have parts of their game that is not up to par but on a given day they have enough talent to hold their own. The hard part for the coaching staff is to have the right one in at the right time.

Maxwell Smith

Pros

1. In the three full games he played last season before injuries wrecked his season (and earned him a medical redshirt), the 6-foot-4, 218-pound California product averaged 322 yards a game passing and completed 68.5 percent of his throws.

2. Smith is the only QB on the UK roster with the experience of starting an SEC game that Kentucky won — he threw for 283 yards and two TDs as a true freshman making his first career start in UK's 30-13 win over Mississippi in 2011.

3. Smith's quick release and ability to make snap reads should be perfect for an Air Raid quarterback.

Cons

1. Injuries. Smith started three games in 2011 and got knocked out of action by an injured shoulder. He missed one game in 2012 because of the shoulder problem, then the final seven games because of an ankle injury. Can Smith stay on the field?

2. Smith is a pure pocket passer who brings no "dual-threat" potential to UK's spread attack.

3. Those four interceptions Smith threw in Kentucky's loss to Western Kentucky last season seem an aberration — he has thrown no picks in five of the seven UK games in which he has played extensively. Still, Smith's performance against a strong Western pass rush raises the question of how effective he will be against defenses that can make him "move his feet."

Patrick Towles

Pros

1. In Towles' first career drive at UK last season against Mississippi State, Towles completed five of five passes for 71 yards with a 32-yard TD pass to La'Rod King. That showed a glimpse of what he can be.

2. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder has dropped 17 pounds from his listed playing weight of last season. That should enhance his ability to keep plays alive with his feet.

3. After earning Mr. Football honors and quarterbacking his Highlands team to three Kentucky state championships, Towles would be a hugely popular choice should he earn the Kentucky starting job.

Cons

1. By his own admission, Towles' passing mechanics, especially his footwork, were not where they needed to be at the end of spring practice

2. In the Blue-White Spring Game, Towles was easily the least effective (6-for-14 passing for 35 yards with an interception and a TD pass) of the three QB contenders.

3. As the only one of the quarterback candidates who has never started a game for Kentucky, Towles is the most unproven in terms of making reads and decisions under SEC-level pressure.

Jalen Whitlow

Pros

1. Whitlow dazzled in the spring game, throwing for 193 yards (17-for-28 with no interceptions) and running for 50 yards while leading drives that yielded three touchdowns and a field goal.

2. Tim Tebow, Cam Newton and Johnny Manziel are three SEC quarterbacks who have proven the potency in a spread offense of having a signal caller who can make plays with their legs. Alone among the UK contenders, Whitlow would bring that extra dimension.

3. After surviving seven starts last season as a true freshman after Smith was sidelined with injury, Whitlow seemed to "carry himself" with a different level of confidence in the spring.

Cons

1. Whitlow went 1-6 in 2012 as a starter, 0-6 in SEC games.

2. The Prattville, Ala., product failed to complete better than 50 percent of his throws in seven different games last season.

3. He looked better throwing the ball in the spring game but, even with the potential extra dimension Whitlow would bring with his mobility, is he an accurate enough passer to run the Air Raid — an offense that is predicated on a quarterback's ability to make quick throws that hit receivers in stride?

Maxwell Smith can lead this team to some wins, I believe he is most deffinately the right choice for Qb.

I'm not worried about wins this year. UK has ZERO shot at a bowl game due to the overall lack of talent and quite possibly playing the toughest schedule of any SEC team.

That is why I think you are better off giving Towels a year of experience and then you are better off for the following years. JMO.

To play a player for the benefit of getting experience over more talented players is wrong especially before the SEC season even starts. This does not send a good message to the players and fans. The object is and always has been to win the game and you have to play your best players to give you the best chance. It would not send a good message to the players who have worked hard to win the position with their play or the fans who want to see their be the best they can be.

Towels has a lot of talent and has the ability to win the starting job and when he improves his footwork and performs better than Smith and Whitlow on the practice field he will start but until he does no way should he be given the starting job. No way..

I disagree. It is called coaching.

Hal Mumme did it with Jared Lorenzen. While Dusty Bonner had done a fine job and was BETTER than Lorenzen he made the change because he knew it was best for the FUTURE of his program.

It is a very very common occurrence in Sports. To me, the choosing of his QB put a black mark on Stoops a bit IMO. I thought he would have the guts to make the tough decisions but I'm not sure he does.

If Stoops is smart he is not even thinking about wins and losses with regards to this season due to the overall lack of talent on the team and their ability to compete in the mini-NFL, err SEC. He should be concentrating on wins and losses two or three years down the road and they only way to do that is get your most talented players more game experience now rather than later. I don't even know why Whitlow is a QB. He should have already been moved to RB or WR a la Randall Cobb, who was actually a pretty good QB, but a much better WR. Coach Brooks made the tough decision to move him.

Trey, your analogy of using Lorenzen vs Bonner is suspect because Dusty Bonner the year before losing his starting job started all 12 games for the Cats and led the SEC in pass efficiency, total offense, and passing yards per game with only had 6 interceptions. His numbers were spectacular plus he led the Cats to 6 victories and a 4-4 record in the SEC. However Mumme made the change and replaced Bonner with Jared Lorenzen and he had great individual numbers except for the fact that he threw 21 interceptions which led the entire nation in that department.

We will never know what would have happened if Mumme had had not made the decision to replace Bonner with Lorenzen and the only thing we know is we went from from a 6-6 season with 4 conference wins with Bonner to a 2-9 season with a 0-8 record in the SEC with Lorenzen.

Bottom line is that to call this good coaching by Mumme is big stretch imo and hopefully Stoops will keep do what he is doing and give Towels game experience when games have already been decided rather than in a starting roll.
