Reese Phillips’ absence will be felt most abruptly on the shoulders of Patrick Towles and Drew Barker. I mean that in the most literal sense. With only two QBs on the roster, and no plans for another addition, Barker and Towles will be splitting every rep this Spring. Stoops wants to avoid fatigue, but believes the extra reps can only help, “Really, the good thing for the quarterbacks is that they’re going to get all the reps, so for a guy like Drew and Patrick, they’re going to get a ton of opportunities and that can only help those two.”
Pat is excited for all the new hands on deck (25 might be a stretch, but they’re deeper than ever). Jeff Badet, Alex Montgomery and Thaddeus Snodgrass are all impact receivers on the outside that had to take a year off. On their first practice back, they proved they’re ready to remove that redshirt. Theaddeus Snodgrass made a big play, Towles said that Badet is someone that can “blow the roof off” at any moment, and Montgomery is an easy target with 3X-sized hands. Which begs me to wonder, are Montgomery’s hands comparable to Karl Towns’ feet?
“He doesn’t look very athletic, but actually threw it pretty decent.”
Coach Stoops said that it’s going to take some time for the UK offense to learn how to communicate with new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, but it took Dawson no time to show off his arm in practice. Both Stoops and quarterback Patrick Towles threw some some jabs at Coach Dawson’s arm, but after watching Stoops throw some passes last Fall, I don’t think he has too much room to talk.
“Go Cats!”
Patrick was nice enough to speak swiftly and quickly in order to get out on time for the basketball game. Ya gotta love the school spirit.
Spring Practice Injury Update
Out for the Spring: Jabari Johnson, Greg Hart, Reese Phillips, Rashad Cunningham, Ryan Timmons.
Partial Participants: Cameron Fogle, Charles Walker, Fred Tiller and Regie Meant.
Timmons may not be able to participate, but what’s most important is the presence of Mike Edwards and Darius West. Both redshirt freshman had injury issues to overcome last season and exclusively provide depth at the strong and free safety positions.
