Kentucky coach Mark Stoops had a somewhat playful, and extremely honest, answer this week when asked about his team being connected with the coaching vacancy at Miami.
“Come on, let me just try to go win a game. I mean, I hope you have to ask that question as the year goes on; that means you’re winning games," said Stoops.
He's right about that.
"What can I say? I really don’t have any answer other than I’m trying desperately to win a football game this weekend (against Tennessee). I certainly don’t need that question brought up and I don’t know because I probably haven’t won enough to have the question like other people have," Stoops said.
"I gotta find a pat answer, so maybe I’m just gonna comment on this job. I need to win some football games and then I’ll have more experience in answering that question.”

It's a tough job coaching Kentucky. Just check the record books and you see that the last coach with just a winning record was Blanton Collier and that was 54 years ago. [ 10-31-2015, 06:25 PM: Message edited by: catmandoo ]

I just don't see any big football program trying to lure Stoops away from Kentucky. He is a nice guy but has shown very little when it comes to being a head football coach. I know UK is a tough job, there are no easy jobs in college football but UK has no tradition in the sport and we may never be able to change that persona regardless of whom we have as coach etc.

I honestly believe UK Football is a lost cause. I'd like to see them step up and start winning some games, but I don't think it will ever happen. As long as we are in the SEC, the only hope I can see is an occasional minor bowl game.

The right coach can win anywhere. James Franklin won quick and won big in the SEC at VAnderbilt and they fell apart after he left and went to Penn St.
I am glad that Stoops is at Kentucky. but Butch Jones was home run hire for UT. He already was a proven winner as a head coach.
Florida got Jim Mcelwain from Colorodo St, a proven winner and bought out his contract....but they are Florida and look at them now...Kentucky should have bet them last year and was competitive against them this year.......
Heading later into the season, you see ho thin the Cats are, getting blown out, where they were competitive early on. They are getting outclassed.
The only way to win quick is to go after a lot more top juco talent every year....It won't work if the best juco go to other teams and you get the also rans. Miss State grabs a lot of Jucos every year and they are now a strong team every season.
Stoops is taking the longer old fashioned approach to building a program. He won't have all of his players until year 5. Of course we, the fans, don't want to wait until year 4 or 5 to have a competitive team.
I, personally, would have preferred he raided the jucos as hard as he could, especially going after a juco QB, some pass rushers on the corners, and just about any position where the talent is better than what he has....

That's pretty much the way I feel.
When Stoops was hired I had hopes he would turn the program around quickly. Not sure why I felt that way as he had no experience as a head coach and we had no way to judge his talents as the head of a program. I guess it was based on his pedigree.
As Norm has said in the past, we're a basketball school. I think we may as well learn to accept it.

I'm sure Stoops knows he must win more games to stay here. If he doesn't know it he will be gone soon. He just can't recruit the number of good players that he needs, and probably never will. Basketball starts tomorrow and I am giving up on football for this year, even though I still have 2 more home games to work. I thought we would win only 4 games before the season started but the way they were playing I thought I was way wrong. But now I have gone back to my prediction of 4 wins or maybe 5 if we are lucky. I hope they can win 2 more but I'm not betting on it.

Bama, the only hope I can see is maybe get a win against Charlotte and Vandy, don't see us having much of a chance against anyone else on the remainder of the schedule.

I agree Ray and wouldnt even bet on the Vandy game since it is there.
We have the WORST O-line and D-line's I have ever seen in a major conference. I dont count vandy as they have a real problem recruiting but I thought we were SUPPOSED to be getting better according to the TALKING HEADS but guess they just giving us the kool aide to drink!

I just have a hard time blaming coachs, this is the pits to coach as we are not and never have been a football powerhouse except for a very short amount of time. All the SEC schools have a decent recruiting base but here in Kentucky we seldom have division 1 talent and when we do we seldom get them to play at Kentucky.
