Kentucky is two games away from bowl eligibility, and although the last three games haven’t inspired much confidence from fans, the folks at ESPN still think the Cats will get there. Mark Schlabach and Brett McMurphy released their updated bowl projections and both agree that Kentucky will play in the Birmingham Bowl on Wednesday, December 30th. Schlabach thinks the Cats will face Cincinnati, while McMurphy projects them to play Tulsa.

Birmingham may not be the most exciting city in the world, but if the Cats do end up there, we will make the best of it. Just think, we can go see the Vulcan statue, eat Dreamland BBQ, drink Good People IPA…they don’t call it the Magic City for nothing!

With the Cats still two wins from bowl eligibility, Saturday’s showdown with the Commodores looms. Once thought to be an easy win and an excuse to come to Nashville for the weekend, the Vanderbilt game is now the linchpin to the season. While Kentucky has slipped, Vanderbilt has found their footing behind a solid defense, beating Missouri and almost knocking off #10 Florida in Gainesville on Saturday. Vandy is currently a 4-point favorite, something that seemed laughable early this season, but that’s the cold, harsh reality UK football is faced with right now.

So which is the real Vanderbilt team? The one that two weeks ago went down to Houston and got pounded 34-zip? Or the one we saw yesterday hold a 7-6 lead over Florida late into the fourth quarter in the Swamp? The answer probably lies somewhere in-between.

Vanderbilt is a much-improved defensive team in year two under Derek Mason but the bottom line is they can’t score with consistency. The Cats have to take advantage of that in the most important game of the Mark Stoops era. If the Cats win they will have 3 victories in the SEC East for the first time in the divisional era and will all but certainly be going bowling. Lose? The wheels keep falling off as a bowl game and the recruiting class fall into jeopardy. With their backs against the wall I think the team finds a way to get it done next Saturday in Nashville.

I would take the empty food bowl or the food stamp bowl or the summer rain bowl at this point......Just get the 6 wins and get back a little momentum.
