Eddie Gran was a candidate for the offensive coordinator job last season, but when Shannon Dawson got the job, I think most of us assumed that Mark Stoops decided to go with Dawson over Gran. Stoops just told reporters that wasn’t the case. Stoops said he offered Gran the job last year, but Gran “wasn’t quite ready to come.”
“He was on my radar from day one,” Stoops said of Gran. “Then he went to Cincinnati, became the offensive coordinator and did very well. Did that for two years and I talked to him a year ago, and Eddie wasn’t quite ready to come. He had only been there two years at Cincinnati with Tommy and wanted to stick it out and this year, after I made the change, I pursued him and wasn’t going to let him tell me no.”
As for Dawson, Stoops said he just wasn’t comfortable with how things were going on offense and felt a change was needed.
“I was disappointed in the outcome and I just felt like — and again, I don’t like to talk negatively about people — but I wasn’t comfortable with the overall direction and leadership on that side,” Stoops said of the offense. “I really stressed halfway through the seasons critical situations and being able to execute in critical situations and I just don’t feel like we made the growth in certain situations. And as I looked at the state of the program in all areas, I just felt like there was change needed at that position.”
