Since Patrick Towles and Reese Phillips announced they were transferring, there have been a lot of question marks around the quarterback position. With former Cincinnati offensive coordinator Eddie Gran and quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw now on staff, finding Drew Barker a backup has become a primary concern, and it looks like another Bearcat is on the way to Lexington.

A source tells KSR that Cincinnati backup quarterback Luke Wright is transferring to Kentucky. The 6’4″ 204 lbs. Wright walked on at Cincinnati and played in four games this past season, going only 1-3 for 16 yards. As a senior at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal in Atlanta, Georgia, Wright passed for 1,080 yards and eight TDs and also rushed for 450 yards and six additional scores. He was named First-Team All-Region and led his team to the Elite 8 in the playoffs.

For the past few years, Wright has been training at QB Country, a quarterback training facility in Mobile, Alabama run by former Ole Miss quarterback David Morris. QB Country confirmed the news that Wright is coming to Kentucky on their website and says he’ll sit out one year and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Here are his Hudl highlights from his senior year of high school:

This could be huge for the Cats and would bet by the time Wright is eligible he will be one strong quarterback. In high school he passed for 1,080 yards, eight TDs and also rushed for 450 yards and six TD's.

CMD, I'm not going to get too excited about this kid yet. He was a walk-on at UC. He may be Brett Farve when it's all said and done, but I think he'll be more like a 3rd stringer.

EC, he isn't going to be a Brett Farve by any means but the way it's going for Kentucky football any new player we get is a bit of a thrill for me as at 75. [Wink]

I am hoping they get the dual threat juco QB. That would give them a change of pace and be a difference maker.

Checking further into Luke Wright I found his recent years stats at Cincinnati:

Wright at 6'4" 200 plus pounds doesn't sound like he would be a nimble and quick quarterback. He also didn't get much playing time at Cincinnati and had a 1-3 passing stat for the 2015 season and 16 total yards passing for a Cincinnati team that was 4-4 in the American Athletic conference. One would think we would not bring in a quarterback unless they have confidence in him however if Cincinnati didn't have enough confidence in him to get any more playing time than he did it looks a little bleak at best. I guess we will found out more next season.
