New co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Darin Hinshaw, made his KSR debut this morning with Ryan Lemond. Hinshaw talked about the busy recruiting weekend, his quarterbacks and when we can expect to see a new wide receivers coach.
The snowstorm hit at a bad time. It’s the Cats’ last big weekend for official visitors, hoping to lure guys like Juco DT J.J. Holmes and Alabama athlete Tadarryl Marshall to Lexington. The staff stayed ahead of the storm, flying in visitors yesterday but not making contact (which would officially start the visit) until today.
We don’t really know what happens at these visits, but Coach Hinshaw did his best to clear things up.
“You go show them everything that’s going to touch their lives . You go show them obviously all of the football aspects, from the weight room to the training tables, their locker room, everything that’s going to touch their lives as far as football goes. You put on the jerseys, you have a photoshoot. You do all of those kind of things that make them feel special.”
After that, the recruits are shown how life will work on campus. They start with the academic side, “Parents especially appreciate that,” he said. They are then shown the dorms, how they will get around campus, and before tiring them out too much, “We feed them to death.”
After some recruiting talk, Hinshaw talked about his quarterbacks. He likes Gunner Hoak, he recruited him at Cincinnati, but he knew they needed more experienced depth that could compete for the starting position right away. Stephen Johnson fit his parameters perfectly.
“I literally looked at about 30 different quarterbacks all over the country that were in junior college — some were committed, some weren’t — and really felt like Stephen was the guy that had the best statistics and threw the ball the way I wanted, because the most important thing is motion to me.”
Hinshaw isn’t all in on Johnson. He spoke with Drew Barker when he first got to campus, telling him, “All eyes are on you right now.” He’s focused most of his talks on leading by example, he’s given him routes and offseason throwing instructions.
Hinshaw is ready to move forward with Spring Ball after the recruiting season to see what type of style his offense will employ, but first they’ve got to find a wide receivers coach. He and Coach Gran are working with Coach Stoops to fill the void. “I would imagine that it get done here in the next week or so.”

It wouldn't be a big surprise if we signed a couple of good recruits. The staff has worked hard finding talent.

The bad part we don't have a good record recruiting compared to all the other SEC teams.

It hurts us a lot not having much football talent in our home state.

Stoops and staff are getting the best talent out of Kentucky and lost only one recently to Bama, but are getting the best that other D1 schools are wanting. Stoops is 0/3 against UL and his staff is still out recruiting them for the top in state players. I think a kid went to Ohio State a few years ago.
Had Kentucky been recruiting Ohio in the past the way that this staff recruits Ohio, they would have had a long string of bowl games. As it is, the current staff is still filling the void left by the previous staff.

For the longest time we had huge inroads coming out of Georgia. Not sure if it was a specific assistant coach we had or what!

Yes, we did. But, if I am not mistaken, the staff is pulling out more higher rated players out of Ohio in greater numbers, than they have anywhere in the past. Ohio is our neighbor and Georgia is not. It was just plain dumb for UK's previous coaching staffs to ignore Ohio. The families can visit their kids games with an easy drive south.
